We had our first convention on Halloween Weekend. The TARDIS Party attended the first ever Hurricane Who in Orlando, Florida. Weve been planning this for a year and it was fantastic to finally go! It was a pretty big landmark for us seeing as a little over a year ago we got our start as a Cosplay group. It was also exciting since it was Roses first convention.
As for any convention we got up at WTF (What The Flavia) Oclock in the morning to make our drive. We, naturally, took the TARDIS, which we decked out for convention purposes. We ended up getting a tad lost, but over all the ride was nice, especially with the play lists we put together.
We arrived and checked into our room before going to register at the convention. To our surprise Jarrod Cooper, the chairman of Hurricane Who, recognized us as The TARDIS Party. We felt quite welcome after that. Since we were one of the first ones there we sort of milled around. There was an odd number of dogs roaming around. It turns out there was some sort of dog grooming convention going on at the same time. Go figure. Maybe we could have gotten K-9 all shined up and nice looking.
As far as our first panels went, we skipped the first Hour with Gareth David Lloyd to see the Classic Who Panel. We were front row dressed at the Tenth Doctor, New Earth Rose and the Newer Sarah-Jane Smith. Of course the guys running the panel sort of looked down on us as if we didn't know anything about the classic series. Boy were they surprised when we were quite involved in the conversation. Don't underestimate the youth fellas :3
After this Rose missed her first shot at a Photo shoot with GDL so we could get food, not to worry though we returned soon after. Wile everyone was getting food I stayed behind to get my copy of Pirate Loop signed by Simon Guerrier. There was no one in line so we had a nice little chat about the book. He also had one of my Jelly Babies and informed me that the green one cries because he has no legs. I swear the man was a child at heart and I did love being around him.
From there I was waiting while Rose, Sarah-Jane and Donna were getting food and I got to hang out with an old friend of mine. You may recall from when I went to Dragon*Con within the paradox of Doctors one of them happened to be Handy, the Meta-crisis Doctor. Handy was at Hurricane Who and she did bring one of her friends who was a rather fantastic Gwen Cooper.
Somewhere along the way Sarah-Jane and the others got lost on some round about trip. What can I say, I give them my TARDIS and they get lost. Humans. Love them, but boy can they be a little daft with a navigation system as advanced as the one on the TARDIS.
When they did get back they all headed off to watch The Wedding of Sarah-Jane. From what I was told she was marrying someone rather similar to my third body... somewhat disturbing. They said it was interesting... that's about all they've told me. They also got to watch the first episode of Girl Number Nine.
Wile they were busy watching this myself and Handy were outside writing a last minute sketch for the Midnight Masquerade. It took about an hour or so to write with about two endings. We decided on an ending and called it a night.
The Second day was Torchwood day for us. I did Dead!Owen and Auror Proudfoot did Ianto. Again we didn't take the picture with GDL because she didn't want to be Ianto in the picture with him, which is perfectly understandable. We spent most of the day rehearsing our skit and hanging out by Dori's Save Ianto Jones stand. She was raising money for Children in Need which was rather nice of her. Sweet girl, loved getting to hang out with her and Laura, another cosplayer who was dressed as Jack from the Time Agency. Lovely people and we had a blast. We also took some new Torchwood cosplay pictures wile we were dressed up. Some silly and some serious. A little editing done on a couple of them but it turned out to be a lovely effect.
After that we went to see a lovely performance titled Moths ate my Doctor Who Scarf. It was possibly one of the best things I have seen in a long time. I would suggest getting the CD of it. Honestly it is a rather lovely personal tale about how Doctor Who had affected someone's life. By the end of it a lot of us were close to tears. I know I had goosebumps and I now defiantly can't ever hear a Knock Knock joke the same ever again.
We changed about mid-day into our costumes for the skit that night. We had me as Ainley!Master, Auror as The Fifth Doctor and Kethry as Adric. We did our final run through and went to the meeting. There were some lovely contestants. Most of which weren't doing skits but the costumes were brilliant. We were all hyped up and ready for our part. We missed some of the entrances since we were somewhere in the middle of the whole thing.
After the performance we watched the rest of the contestants and cheered them on. Turns out we won first place for Best Doctor Who Theme. If you are interested in seeing the skit it has been uploaded on our Youtube page, or it will be linked to right here: [link]
It was a year ago to the day that the TARDIS party had done a public event. We have come a long way since then and it was nice to see our growth over the past year. I have to admit, I'm excited to see where we will be in a year's time.
Sadly we have come to our last day of the Con after this. We once again pulled on our Fifth Doctor and Ainley!Master outfits for the day. Again we took time aside to take some cosplay pictures since we have little of those.
Turns out in place of the Master everyone thought I was attempting to be Tony Lee, which was oddly amusing. I will be taking over your mind with comic books as my next project Suffice to say it became a running joke and Tony Lee even took some pictures with me and dubbed me to be his clone. Let me wear his waistcoat and all.
Last thing we did was go see the showing of Day Four of Children of Earth with Gareth David Lloyd commenting on it. It was brilliantly hysterical and also a little sad. Although all sad moments aside GDL saying that John Barrowman's chin looked like an arse is... rather amusing to no end. Also the story about John wearing a ridiculous mustache when he was uncovered after dying is kind of hysterical as well.
I have to be upset I forgot to bring my gas mask along when he went on this long rant. Jack, don't you think it would be best if we brought a Gas mask? I mean we have some here. It may be better if we bring a gas mask? Oh.. okay... well let's check this convenience store maybe they have a gas mask. Hello? What? You're bringing the gas mask oh brilliant.. And so on. Given there was barely a dry eye by the end of it though it was a blast.
Closing ceremonies followed and there was a raffle to win this rather amazing basket from Dori. All the money donated for raffle tickets was for Children in Need. Jarrod made a joke about us raising $456 for it. However total was somewhere around $500 so good job guys! Not only that but Laura did win, and I personally can't think of anyone more deserving then her.
We said our goodbyes as sad as we were to go. Ride home seemed so much longer then the one up there, probably because we were leaving behind one of the best weekends ever. Hopefully we will be back next year, money and time permitting. It was great meeting you all and seeing all our fans, new and old. Thank you all for making this one amazing convention!
Cheers
-The Doctor
